Reykjavik is a surprisingly arty city and is filled with art galleries of various shapes and sizes. Of all the commercial art galleries in Reykjavik, the biggest and most notable is the Art Gallery Fold, where many inexpensive pieces can be purchased as memorable souvenirs. Acclaimed local Icelandic artists regularly exhibit their work here, and also at galleries such as the modest Gallery Nema Hvao, which is operated by the Art Academy of Iceland.The most important collection of paintings and art works is housed within the National Gallery of Iceland, in central Reykjavik. Established in the mid-1880s, this historic gallery is home to many different styles, ranging from traditional Icelandic oil paintings to rather vivid modern pieces. The Reykjavik Art Museum (Kjarvalsstadir) is also worth a mention and is dedicated to one of the country's leading artists, Jóhannes Kjarval.
