Many quality Icelandic museums are to be found within the city of Reykjavik, offering visitors the chance to learn a little about the city's early days and traditional culture. This is particularly so at the Arbaer Museum and also at the Reykjavik Museum (Arbaejarsafn), a popular attraction founded just over 50 years ago and located on the eastern side of the city. In recent years, the Reykjavik Museum has grown dramatically in size and now resembles a small town, complete will many historic buildings, which were carefully relocated from the city centre.

For an insight into the maritime industry of yesteryear, the Icelandic Maritime Museum can be found just outside of Reykjavik and is housed within a historic storage dating back to the 1860s. Traditional exhibits are to be found at the extremely noteworthy National Museum of Iceland. Located on the southern side of Reykjavik, this cultural attraction is perhaps the city's definitive documentation of its development and features a range of archaeological related displays.




For something quite out of the ordinary, the Icelandic Phallological Museum will come as quite a surprise to many and is sited within central Reykjavik. With a strong phallus theme, exhibits include everything from a whale penis to rather graphic art works.
