Although Reykjavik is the Icelandic capital and filled with attractions, there is still plenty to see outside of the city's environs and around Faxaflói Bay. Summer attractions close to Reykjavik are both enjoyable and varied, often being based around the coastline, such as whale watching. However, when the winter snow arrives in Iceland, many tourists head to the neighbouring ski resorts of Bláfjöll and Skalafell.
At around 45 minutes from Reykjavik is the world-famous Blue Lagoon Spa, one of Iceland's most visited of all its many tourist attractions. The extremely beautiful and exceedingly popular geothermal spa that is the Blue Lagoon features naturally heated mineral-rich waters, where temperatures average around 40°C / 104°F.

Famous for its rich turquoise waters, the Blue Lagoon Spa is just under 40 km / 25 miles from Reykjavik and stands within the small fishing town of Grindavik, close to the Kaflavik Airport. Visitors to the Blue Lagoon come hear to bathe in its steaming geothermal seawater and enjoy the many reputed medicinal benefits, which are said to leave the skin fully revitalised.

Reykjavik Attractions Nearby: Hafnarfjörour (Dolphin and Whale Watching) - Reykjavik, Iceland, IS
Each year, between the months of May and September, thousands of tourists head to Hafnarfjörour to observe the many dolphins and whales, which often frequent the waters surrounding this town. Close to Reykjavik, whale and dolphin watching cruises regularly depart from Hafnarfjörour Quay and last around three hours, along with a number of sport fishing trips. Hafnarfjörour is also known for its popular Summer Solstice Festival.

At just over 25 km / 16 miles from Reykjavik, Mosfellsbaer is easy to reach and is home to the extremely popular Hvammsvik Outdoor Centre. Offering a host of outdoor attractions and recreational activities, the Hvammsvik Outdoor Centre is particularly family orientated. Expect to find everything from golfing and fishing, to horse riding and various sports. Those feeling a little adventurous can even spend the day kayaking along the nearby river.

A popular Icelandic recreational area just 10 km / 6 miles to the north of Reykjavik, Mount Esja often goes by the name of Esjan and is actually a range comprised of numerous volcanic mountains. Hiking is amongst the many attractions around Mount Esja, with the most notable hiking trails leading towards the summits of both Kerhólakambur and Pverfellshorn, where at around 850 metres / 2,780 feet, the views are nothing short of breathtaking.

Less than an hour from Reykjavik, the Skalafell mountain offers a range of seasonal attractions, including summer hiking trails and winter skiing. As soon as the Icelandic snow begins to falls, crowds descend upon the mountains acclaimed Skalafell Ski Centre to enjoy the exceptional skiing facilities on offer. Generally, skiing at Skalafell is available from January through April. Those in need of ski equipment will find plenty available here for hire.
