The summer months of Reykjavik may not be scorching hot, but they are warm enough to ensure that the city's parks and gardens are green, pleasant spaces, often featuring plenty of flowers, fountains and statues. Despite the harsh winter weather, Reykjavik is surprisingly home to a thriving botanical garden (Grasagarourinn i Laugardal), which contains literally thousands of wonderful specimens from all around the planet, including many exotic specimens.

Close to the very heart of Reykjavik, the aptly named Family Park (Fjölskyldugarourinn) is regularly frequented by Icelandic locals and offers an escape from modern life. Nearby, both the Ellioavatn Gardens and Heiomörk Park provide similar tranquil spots, where picnicking, jogging and native wildlife can all be enjoyed.

A series of ponds, themed gardens and flower borders look at their absolute best during the summer months, although the autumn colours at the Grasagarourinn i Laugardal are also rather special. Plant lovers will be pleased to find that all of the main plants are clearly labelled and include many unusual species.

Reykjavik Parks and Gardens: Ellioavatn Gardens - Reykjavik, Iceland, IS
Located on the very outskirts of Reykjavik and providing endless opportunities for a host of recreational activities, Ellioavatn Gardens boasts one of the regions largest lakes. Also onsite are some truly ancient Viking remains, which are amongst the oldest in the whole of Iceland.

Known as the Family Park, Fjölskyldugarourinn is located on the eastern side of central Reykjavik and is brimming with fun activities for all of the family. Particularly popular is the miniature golf course, tall observation tower and radio-controlled cars, while the main attractions are really the elevated cable car rides and the strong Viking theme.

Situated just outside of Reykjavik and only a short journey from the city itself, Heiomörk Park is brimming with native Icelandic flora and fauna, and has become a popular site for escaping the city and has plenty to offer. Many people come here early in the morning for a quick jog, while others prefer to sit back on the grass and enjoy a leisurely picnic in pleasant surroundings.
